Have you seen the video on you tube that shows people waiting to be rescued on a broken escalator? (You can view the 2-minute version at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47rQkTPWW2I. )
I have students who will wait and wait until you take time from your class to “save” them; they do not help themselves. Nor do they think they need to think on their own. I also work with people who expect to be saved. Administrators push you to “cover” the curriculum, to provide rigor and then when you do, the parents complain and that same administrator asks what are you doing to help students help themselves.
Thinking seems to be highly over-rated by some folks. Thinking for themselves is a vestigial trait. And people say it is the education system that is broken? No it is themselves who are broken.
